Louis Riel Quotes
"My people will sleep for one hundred years when they awake, it will be the artists who give them their spirit back." Louis Riel
"It is true that our savage origin is humble, but it is meet that we honor our Mother as well as our Fathers. Why should we concern ourselves about what degree of mixture we pocess of Eropean or Indain blood? If we have ever so little of either gratitude or filial love, would we not be proud to say "We are Mètis!"? (Louis Riel quoted in Howard 1970: 46; Jennifer S.H. Brown, Strangers In Blood, p.219).
Louis Riel Commemoration Service Prayer
(The Canadian Michif Language Dictionary,
Metis Resource Centre Inc.,
506-63 Albert Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba)
Lord, God our Creator, every year on this day, we the Metis Nation, our relatives, our friends, our youth and Elders, meet to remember and give thanks to Louis Riel, our leader, and the Metis people who believed in the cause of the Metis Nation, then, today, and always.
Louis Riel and his Metis followers built the road for the Metis Nation and all other nations so that we can enjoy freedom and good life in this great providence of Manitoba, and the beautiful country called Canada.
Today, Lord, we remember our forefathers, our Metis war veterans, for their sacrifices and their bravery, at all cost.
Lord, we ask in the spirit of Louis Riel and of our Metis Ancestors, to give us courage so we may remain on the road which they built and may uphold their visions.
God of love, Father of us all, we thank you for our past; we thank you for creating us.
We ask you God to continue to guide the Metis Nation with your spirit of love so we can continue our journey as Louis Riel would have wished.
God, our Creator, give us courage, let us be of one mind, make us righteous, thankful, and proud.
Help the Metis to work closely together especially utilizing our Elders as teachers and preparing our youth for the future.
Lord provide us with direction and inspiration as we build a road for the Metis Nation in this country.
We must have strong Metis families in order to have a strong Metis Nation.
Thank you and Amen.
